The breeze was a welcome relief from the humid air inside Lalo’s house. They’d spent the last hour packed into the living room as Gabe showed the boy’s mother techniques to force his shoulder back into place. All the while, Lalo glued himself to Sara’s side and rambled on about how she was the best nurse he’d ever seen.

Gabe couldn’t argue. The boy was right. Sara was remarkable.

Night had closed in now as they slowly walked back to the compound hand in hand, light on their path coming from the windows of the houses along the main street and the full moon above. It wasn’t the night he’d planned, but it felt right anyway. Good thing he’d planned ahead.

“Thanks for letting me fix his shoulder,” she said, squeezing his hand. Shadows covered half of her face, but her copper eyes were still bright. “It’s been almost twenty years since I did something like that.”

“Thank you for helping. It’s a two-person job, though I’m afraid Lalo will be heartbroken tomorrow when he wakes up and you’re not there at his bedside.”

“Whatever.” She snorted. “I’m old enough to be his mom. Hell, I’m almost old enough to be his grandmother, now that I think about it.”

“Hmm. Well, you’re the sexiest grandmother I’ve ever seen.” He tugged her closer, then off the road and onto a footpath that curved away from the village and up a hill. The sweet fragrance of plumeria and star fruit trees drifted on the breeze.

“Where are we going?” she asked, the light of the full moon reflecting in her eyes as she looked up at him.

He couldn’t resist stopping to cup her face and kiss her. It seemed like it had been years since he’d tasted her, and he couldn’t get enough. Might never get enough. Somewhere in the back of his head a little warning bell niggled, but he was too happy and content at that moment to care. Gabe pulled back slightly then held up a finger, grinning. “Wait here.”

Alone, he jogged the rest of the way up the hill to the clearing and grabbed the bag of things he’d brought up here earlier from their hiding spot behind a boulder. Quickly, Gabe laid out a blanket and pillows, two bottles of Imperial, a bag of Sara’s favorite snack chips, and some chocolates he’d picked up at the market in the village. Then he lit the citronella candles he’d brought and set them on the rock surrounding his little love den before tucking the duffel bag away behind the boulder again.

Gah! He had no idea what he was doing with her, honestly. Usually, when he wanted to sleep with a woman, he just put it out there and they went back to his room. Or hers. But this thing with Sara felt different. Not necessarily in a way he could explain, or wanted to, but...different. And so he wanted to make an effort to woo her. This was her first time in Costa Rica, after all, and their first time together.
